What is an Elder

The Elders serve as the Trustees. The Scriptures call for them to be overseers of the church and thus have spiritual as well as physical oversight of the body and control over its corporate assets. They are responsible to discern the mind of Christ on each and every matter that comes before them, as spiritually mature persons. They are called to discover what the living Christ desires to do in and through His church. They are to lead according to the will of God and to make its decisions according to Biblical principles and by unanimous consent.
(Acts 20:28-30; I Peter 5:1-5).

What is the Mission

The mission of the Elder Board is to direct the spiritual, financial, and personal affairs of the church in alignment with its Bylaws and Constitution. This includes:

  • Acting as the Legal Board of Directors for the church.
  • Ensuring decisions are made by unanimous consent, or by a two-thirds majority if unanimity is not achieved after prayer and deliberation.
  • Supporting the Lead Pastor as the primary teacher of the Word of God and administrator of the ordinances.
  • Overseeing the coordination, administration, and communication of all programs and principles of the church.

WHAT DO ELDERS DO?

Elders serve by:

  • Serving as the Legal Board of Directors for the church.
  • Directing the spiritual, financial, and personal affairs of the church.
  • Supporting and carrying out the Lead Pastor’s vision for the congregation.
  • Administering church policies and resolutions with Biblical integrity.
  • Providing pastoral care, including prayer, counseling, and spiritual guidance.
  • Teaching and equipping members to grow in faith and service.
  • Leading, discipling, and mentoring ministry teams.
  • Providing counsel for members in times of need or decision-making.
  • Training and nurturing leadership within the church.
  • Monitoring and overseeing Deacons in their leadership of Care Units.

    WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM MY ELDER?

    Your elder can care for you by:

    • Praying for and offering wisdom and discernment to the congregation.
    • Ensuring the church remains aligned with its mission and values.
    • Addressing conflicts or concerns with Biblical integrity.
    • Serving as examples of faith, maturity, and Christ-like character.
    HOW DO I CONTACT MY ELDER?

    Every South Bay member is assigned to an elder based on their involvement and needs. To contact your elder, you can:

    • Find their information in the Church Directory.
    • Reach out through the church office at office@sobcc.org.
    • Connect after Sunday services or small group meetings.

    WHEN SHOULD I CONTACT MY ELDER?

    Two-way communication is best, so feel free to reach out anytime. This includes:

    • Spiritual questions or struggles
    • Prayer requests or praise reports
    • Major life events (e.g., celebrations, crises, or decisions)
    • Need for guidance or biblical counsel
    • Anything you wish to share
